11.30 The Tin Drum

Based on a novel from 1958 (or 59) by Günter Grass, this film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1979.

As far as a rudimentary plot outline:

The Tin Drum is based on a boy that makes the conscious decision to stop growing upon his third birthday in order to avoid "maturing" into a miserable adult. In turn, Oskar's comfort lies in his tin drum.

I will say only that The Tin Drum, for me, is disturbingly real. Accepting the premise of the film as a bit un-realistic, the film absorbs itself in an unsettling presentation of everyday life in 1930s and 40s Germany.

It is rather thought provoking and is definitely worth seeing if you haven't.
